Safety filters have two functions: to act as a backup to the primary filter and to protect the engine during primary filter servicing.
• They serve as a backup filter in case the primary filter is damaged or improperly installed.
• They prevent contaminants from entering the clean side of the air intake system during primary filter servicing.
• They are designed to plug rapidly if contamination gets past the primary filter, alerting operators to an issue.
• It is recommended that safety filters be replaced with every third primary filter change unless the primary filter has failed.
